Cairo to Cape Town Road Show 2012 – Ghana report

The Dutch multinational electronics company Philips is currently conducting a Pan-African road show for raising awareness on latest innovations in the areas of lightning and energy bringing. On 15 June 2012, the road show made station in Accra, Ghana

Together with Right to Play Ghana and the engineering company Deng, a four team football tournament was organized at the school of the Accra Academy – with lots of guests from governmental and non-governmental organizations. This has been a maiden event because up until now, only international football matches in Ghana were played under flood lights. As part of Philips’ Corporate Social Responsibility programme, the flood lights were donated to the Accra Academy. Its headmaster Nii Abbey Ashong expressed his excitement and according to him “the solar light would go a long way to help reduce the bills they pay to Electric Company every month if used for the other facilities.

According to the former Football for Development coordinator and now Country Manager of Right to Play Ghana, Bella Bello Bitugu , this example of a cooperation between a corporate body and a sport for development organisation should be encouraged and replicated in other areas and forms.

Through this collaboration Right to Play would have received the necessary branding and visibility within corporate bodies, teachers, students and the wide Ghanaian public. Bella Bello Bitugu remarked that “it is enriching to observe the result of cooperation between Sport for Development organizations and corporate bodies like Philips and the potential this has for the development of children and the youth.
